back in business....

Finally - the mac is back in business. Boy it's been a rough week or so having to make do with the desktop at work and the one at home. I hadn't realized just how convenient it is to have everything on the laptop and be able to take it everywhere. Just syncing work files and email between the two desktops was a nasty bother. But all is well now, after a night reloading software and restoring backed up files (yay, I had a backup - boo, it was a month old :þ ) and then spending this afternoon resetting preferences.

On a side note about syncing, I found the most useful extension for Firefox. Check out Foxmarks for syncing your firefox bookmarks across several computers. It works like a charm!

CANHEIT 2006

Well, I've been at the CANHEIT 2006 conference for the past couple of days and there has been some really great information presented. There were 2 sessions on wikis yesterday that I found particularly useful and I'm now eager to get home and setup some projects. As always, I'm on the lookout for practical applications for new (to us) technologies that we are considering trying. I could think of a few uses right away so I think wikis bear further exploration. One of sessions was about using wikis for content management and project management... interesting. This may bear further investigation as well. Probably not so useful for overall management purposes because of the lack of reporting features, however, for small teams/projects - this might fit the workflow nicely.

on the road ...

I'm on the road pretty frequently, either travelling to Fredericton for meetings or, like this weekend, travelling to Halifax for a conference (CANHEIT 2006). Fredericton is about an hour and 15 minutes from Saint John and Halifax is around 4.5 hours. To make the most of the time spent travelling, I like to multitask when possible - work planning, work & meeting prep, eating on the go - are some things that can be undertaken to leverage the time spent in travel. For work planning and prep, it can be very handy to have a small recorder with you (unless you have an excellent memory), and for eating,

hard disk madness ...

I wonder how many people can say they suffer hard disk failures on a regular basis? I can, I can! Hmmmph, this has to be the third failure on a work machine (2 macs, 1 pc) within the past 3 years or thereabouts - and it's a doozy as it's on my primary machine, a 17" mac powerbook. Yes, yes, I do have a backup but it's probably at least a couple of weeks old. Of most irritation at the moment is the 5 hours of work I lost on some CSS I was coding up yesterday. So here we go again, I'll be working on my testing machine (using XP) until the silver beast is repaired. I guess it's just as well that I'll be off to a conference on Sunday so I won't really be needing it for a while. Still - what is it about the environment here that makes the hard disk just up and die??? Very annoying.
